Dinner and a Movie

"Paradise Falls"
Various tableware, balloons, chocolate, and natural elements.
Inspired by the movie Up (2009)

This piece illustrates the central theme of the movie which is life after loss. The story illustrates how heartbreaking loss can be, but that through loss there can be opportunities to honor those lost and move through our grief in various ways. The main character in this movie channels his love for his departed wife by taking an adventure to the place they’ve always dreamed of going to, by flying his house to Paradise Falls with balloons. In this piece, the palm leaves are representative of paradise, and the cut up balloons represent the spirit of adventure. Butterflies often symbolize the departed returning to say hello to their loved ones. The monarch symbolizes his departed wife returning and being with him through this adventure in spirit. The rough square plate and decorative floral plate are representations of the husband and wife, as they are symbolically referenced as these shapes repeatedly throughout the movie. The melted chocolate represents the loss of his wife.
