"Our skin is what stands between us and the world... It imprisons us, but it also gives us individual shape... it's the ideal canvas to decorate with paints, tattoos, and jewelry." (Ackerman, 68)

"Language is steeped in metaphors of touch. We call our emotions feelings, and we care most deeply when something 'touches' us." (Ackerman, 70)

One could argue that as humans, we need touch to survive. Touch is an essential form of communication that signals the brain into action. But touch is not just pertinent for the physical survival. It is imperative, not only for mental survival but to flourish.

"Hair deeply affects people, can transfigure or repulse them." (Ackerman, 84)

"Symbolic of life, hair bolts from our head. Like the earth, it can be harvested, but it will rise again. We can change its color ad texture when the mood strikes us, but in time it will return to its original form, just as Nature will in time turn our precisely laid-out cities into a weed way." (Ackerman, 84)

Hair is important to the self as a form of self expression. The intent of this shoot was to communicate the freedom one feels when they are surrounded peers, and expressing themselves through clothing and unique hairstyles.
